Research Your Interviewer

Want an instant advantage in your next interview? Do your homework -- not just on the company and position, but on the interviewer, too!

1. If your interviewer isn't the person who schedules you, find out who will be interviewing you. Ask the scheduler if he can offer any insights on the interviewer's personality or interview style -- or if he can connect you with someone else who can provide the insights you need.
2. Learn everything you can about your interviewer online. Check the company's website, look on LinkedIn, and do a quick Google search to see what comes up. The more you learn about your interviewer, the better prepared you'll be to connect on a personal level -- and make a great impression!
3. Use common sense. Be careful not to cross the line and reveal anything you learned that's not directly related to the job you want. Explaining that you read an article the interviewer published? Good thing. Explaining that you have three cats, just like your interviewer? That may not be the relationship-builder you intended.
