If an employer calls you for a screening interview with no notice, here's how to always be prepared -- and handle it like a pro:

  1. Keep a printed copy of your resume, your 30-second "elevator pitch" and a list of potential follow-up questions handy at home. Email the docs to yourself too, so you can instantly access them from your mobile phone.
  2. Practice your phone skills. Interviewing over the phone presents a unique set of challenges. Have a friend or family member conduct/record a mock phone screening interview with you, so you can review it and hone your skills.
